'Look At the Acrobatics' or Deceptive War

The October 2023 Israel-Hamas version of the Arab-Israeli conflicts of the 20th century, which was reheated with the bizarre, asymmetrical and at the same time raid-style Hamas operation, caused hundreds of people to lose their lives and property.

Neither the Ukraine-Russia war, nor the pandemic that tends to relapse, nor the economic crisis, nor any other problems; the whole world was, or is, focussed on Israel and Gaza.

The October 2023 Israel-Hamas version of the Arab-Israeli conflicts of the 20th century, which was reheated with the bizarre, asymmetrical and at the same time raid-style Hamas operation, caused hundreds of people to lose their lives and property. Everyone, whether they are related to the issue or not, started to express their opinions and make comments. While the majority condemned Israel's brutality, western democracy for some reason emphasised Hamas' brutality, ignored Israel's genocide-like practices, did not want to see them, failed in class with an outdated understanding of democracy and sided with Israel against Hamas.

The apparent reasons for the outbreak of this unlawful war, in which both sides have been waging without discriminating between children, women and civilians, are well known to everyone. The territorial, historical and theological reasons for the Arab-Israeli conflict are obvious, but in this latest incident, there is a very special and important reason that is not talked about or highlighted much: the geopolitics of the Eastern Mediterranean, where the Gaza Strip will also claim rights as a coastal strip, and in particular the overlap and disputes in the Exclusive Economic Zone borders of the states in the region.

In May 2021, in our article titled "Historical and Analysis of the Eastern Mediterranean Maritime Jurisdictions Problem and Equitable Solution Proposals", which we wrote together with Dr. Mehmet Ali KILIÇ, who was my PhD student at that time, we explained the details of the issue as much as possible. You can access our joint article, which is included as a chapter (pp.51-81) in the book titled "Academic Studies in Human and Social Sciences" published by Livre de Lyon publishing house, from the link below.

The main theme of this book chapter is the analysis of the Eastern Mediterranean maritime jurisdiction problem and Turkey. In this study, we have defined the Eastern Mediterranean, discussed its importance in terms of strategic and energy resources, and distinguished the maritime jurisdiction areas in the Eastern Mediterranean in accordance with the International Law of the Sea. We have discussed the exclusive economic zone and the theses of Turkey, Greece and the Greek Cypriot Administration of Southern Cyprus (GCASC) on this issue and especially the recent agreements from a broad perspective. We have tried to list the loss of maritime jurisdiction caused by the agreements signed by the GCASC and Greece with the riparian countries and the policies that Turkey should follow in the following period in the form of recommendations to decision makers.

When you learn the detailed information, you will realise that while we are looking at the game, the game is much bigger.

Happy reading.
