Hey Old man, step on the gas

While I was driving my car at the roundabout in Küçükçekmece, where I went for a job the other day, I got a small warning behind me in our Karagümrük language, probably because I was moving a little slowly in heavy traffic. The minibus driver was yelling, "Old man, step on the gas," hanging down halfway to his waist.

Address of the Minibus Driver

As time passes, it progresses in eternity, by destroying the human body, in its journey of life.

I went back to my wife and I didn't just have to say if this guy is telling me, we both started laughing uncontrollably. Of course, we continued on our way. But someone called me old. Although my soul remained young, the tiredness of the body and the deep traces of years were now clearly evident when viewed from the outside. I said wow, it's nice to be discovered by yourself, but it's not nice to be told by someone else.

What Does Chacharon (in Turkish) Mean?

I immediately thought of Cicero, who lived during the Roman Empire. I took the pen and started to write my feelings and thoughts. The subject, you guessed it, became "old age" all of a sudden.

I thought of Cicero, a Roman statesman famous for his oratory. You know, Cicero is a famous figure as one of the most important orators in history. Those who are interested in philosophy know Cicero very well. Since he was a good orator and also a lawyer at that time, he had to talk a lot. For this reason, the origin of the word "çaçaron", which was translated into Turkish from Greek and used for people who "speak a lot and silence the other person, with a strong jaw and chatter", also comes from Cicero.

Ciceron's Words on Old Age:

In a book he wrote, Ciceron mentions four reasons that make old age fearful:

  • First, it takes people away from work,
  • Second, it weakens
  • Third, it deprives it of many pleasures,
  • Fourth, it is near death.

According to Cicero, death is not something to be afraid of. It's a natural ending. According to Cicero, after death there is either nothing or a new eternal life. If there is nothing after death, there is no reason why death should be bad. But if there is eternity after death, then it is a good thing, not a bad thing.

As for despair: “Who does not think that they can live another year, no matter how old they are?”.

As for the declining of the subjects that the elders enjoy over time: “There is pleasure in watching things from the back row,” says Cicero. Besides,

On lust: “Material pleasure is the most innocent scourge of nature. To obtain this pleasure, insatiable desires flare up out of caution. Treason, the destruction of the state, secret negotiations with the enemies always come out of it. There is no crime, no evil act that lust ignores. The leader of evil and thoughtlessness is the desire for pleasure.”

I swear by God, I am not saying these things, it is Cicero who caused me to write this article. Old people, don't be angry with me.

Let's not be afraid of getting old:

In summary, Cicero says in the final analysis; “don't be afraid of getting old”, “get ready to enjoy.” But there is a saying in this book that Cicero should ponder over all the old and all the young:

“I don't know, but it seems to me that in general, when a person takes his enthusiasm from everything, he also takes it from life. Children have their own whims; Do young people miss them? Newbies also have ambitions, are they sought after in the age called middle age? This age also has whims and elders do not seek them. The whims of old age are the last whims. Like the previous ones, they come and go, and then being satiated with life shows that the time of death has come, that life has been lived fully.”

“No matter how long the life given to us is, we must be satisfied. An actor doesn't have to finish the play to be liked, it's enough to be liked on the screen; And a wise man does not have to live to the end of life, for a life, however short, is long enough to live in a good and honorable way.”

In one place, Cicero finally says in his book: "When a person lives long, he sees many things he does not want to see."

Conclusion

Do we want to see everything? It is probably not desirable to leave something to its taste and to live old age without falling into the hands. Old age is the reality of life. The little one will one day do it to you as it did to me from behind. “Head gas, old man, step on the gas.”

I leave you alone with the words of that beautiful song of Orson Welles, who interprets my feelings. If you want, you can listen to this beautiful song, which is very meaningful at my age, from the video link.

Stay with respect and love...

I Know What It's Like To Be Young

Age doesn't matter in youth, one doesn't even stop and think.

Until one day an old man came and said:

“I know what it's like to be young, but you, you don't know what it's like to be old.”

One day, you will say the same things.

Time flies, the story remains.

I asked a lot of questions, smart guys I know.

I couldn't find the answer to all of them, and no one has so far.

You will have days to remember, full of laughter and tears.

After summer, winter will come, so the years will pass.

So, my friend, let's make music together.

I'll steal from the old ones while you sing the new ones.

When your youth is gone

Someone share their time with you

I know what it means to be young, but you, you don't know what it means to be old.
