Incompetent whistleblowers
There is no institution without problems, and it is unthinkable that it should exist. The important thing is to identify the problems and solve them. Our responsibility is to be a part of the solution according to our position.
It is the "ignorant courageous" people that we have to deal with rather than the problems we will encounter as the processes continue. Such people form the main basis of failure of processes by prioritizing themselves rather than solutions. The higher their position, the more the problems enter a vicious circle.
Unfortunately, these people with "ignorant courage"; Incompetent people, who wholeheartedly believe that they are very good at their job, do not feel uncomfortable to praise themselves and what they do, to stand out in every job, and to aspire to jobs that they cannot actually do! On the contrary, everything
They think they have rights!
However, this mix of 'ignorance and presumptuousness' is a personal approach that creates a tremendous professional thrust. 'cons' turn into 'pluses' in terms of career. After all, 'incompetent enthusiasts' always and everywhere rise faster...
Meanwhile, really knowledgeable and talented people do not come forward by acting 'too humble' in their working life, they do not aspire to high positions on their own, they wait for their value to be recognized... Of course, they get hurt while waiting, they pull themselves back even more... Probably 'lack of passion' by their superiors. They are accused of…”
As a result of the research, the following findings were reached:
- Unqualified people do not realize how unqualified they are.
- Unqualified people tend to exaggerate their qualifications.
- Unqualified people are also incapable of seeing and understanding the qualities of truly qualified people.
- If their qualifications are increased by education, the same unqualified people begin to realize their lack of qualifications.
The incompetent ambitious person is incapable of assessing his own capacity and diagnosing his deficiency. But the real thing is that this cocktail of "incompetence + arrogance" creates an irresistible professional thrust.
Turning from a minus to a plus in terms of career. The "incompetent", who wholeheartedly believes that he is very good at his job, will not feel the slightest discomfort from praising himself and what he has done, standing out in every job, and assuming unlimited duties. On the contrary, he will see it as a "right".
Meanwhile, truly knowledgeable and talented people will be “too modest” in their working life to be unfair to themselves, not stand out, not aspire to high positions on their own, expect their worth to be recognized (and, when not, they will be stingy and pull themselves back even further), and possibly by their superiors. They will be accused of "lack of passion".
Dunning-Kruger Syndrome
In fact, psychologists have defined this condition as "Dunning-Kruger Syndrome". Dunning Kruger Syndrome has started to be heard very often recently. The syndrome, also called the Dunning Kruger effect, got its name from the people who did the research. Researchers named Dunning and Kruger, who conducted research on this syndrome, went down in history by winning the Nobel Prize in 2000 as a result of their findings and theories.
Expert psychologists this unconsciousness; They attribute it to a chronic inability to self-assess. The diagnosis that led psychologists Justin Kruger and David Dunning at Cornell University to go down in history and win the Nobel Prize in 2000 is defined as "Ignorant Courage". Summarizing his theories, he says, "ignorance, unlike true knowledge, increases one's self-confidence."
Surely there are such people around you. You think to yourself how this man or woman came to these positions! You must have lamented how he could be in this position with his head. Take a look at the world of art and television. Take a look at the behavior and approach of the rulers around. Take a look at your own work environment. You will surely find such people in your circle.
The fact that these people were not aware of their own inadequacies turned out to be an advantage for them. Because these people believed that they were really good. Therefore, they do not hesitate to stand out and be proud of what they do. They see this as a right. They think they are awake.
Of course, at the other extreme, there are people who are qualified but do not show themselves and do not brag about their own achievements. Unfortunately, although these people are qualified, they will remain in the background, they will not aspire to high positions on their own, they will want their talents to be seen by others. In the end, they will lag behind what they can do.
If you add to this the fact that human resources will prefer the candidate "confident and likely to get good results" among two similar CVs, it becomes clear that the environment for the Peter Principle of Dunning Kruger Syndrome is prepared.
The Peter Principle: Every employee rises to the point of being incompetent in the work environment. As a result, higher authorities are often held by incompetent people. is occupied.
In an experiment held at Cornell University, 45 students were scrutinized. The level of knowledge was measured by asking various questions to these students. People who knew less about the questions claimed that they knew more questions and that they would know almost all of the questions when they had a good day. Those who knew most of the questions said that they answered fewer questions. When the test results came out, people who said they knew little knew about 90% of the test, while those who claimed to have asked more questions answered only 10% correctly. As a result of this experiment, psychologists revealed that knowledgeable people show humility, and people who believe that there are too many truths despite knowing little are described as "ignorant courage".
The researchers, who examined the events describing the people that we often encounter in daily life and that we cannot understand, have clarified the events with many theories. Psychologists, who focused on the concept of "ignorant courage" in the colloquial language, argued that the courage of the person actually comes from ignorance, and described such people as those with Dunning-Kruger Syndrome. It describes people who have a very successful and outstanding career, and people who have little knowledge and are not experts in their fields, but who have come to a successful position.
It has been determined that people who are not able to express this even though they have a lot of knowledge and who are humble, lack the ability to evaluate themselves. And people who praise themselves despite their lack of knowledge, put themselves at the forefront of every job, and think that they are professionally competent, can turn their shortcomings into a plus with these methods and come to successful positions.
Not being able to evaluate one's own knowledge makes them stay in the background and not in the place they deserve. And when he sees people who are in a superior position to him, even though he has no knowledge, he leaves himself completely in the background and loses his power in his professional field. Psychologists, who argue that ignorance will always increase one's confidence, have shown that such people get ahead of talented and knowledgeable people. And these people, who think that they are successful in their professional life, continue to live a quality life, thinking that they are in the position they deserve.
Many of us wonder and cannot understand how some people achieve this success or why they are in a higher position when they have no field and have lower knowledge than we do. In fact, we lament how people who can't put two words together on television or who can't act in daily life get to this position. The reasons for these thoughts were investigated as Dunning-Kruger syndrome and clarified with a few theories.
Conclusion
After all, "incompetent enthusiasts" will always and everywhere rise faster and rise higher. Take a look around and you will agree with the experts.
As soon as a person becomes aware of his abilities, he starts to do good works. If you know yourself and your abilities, you will not encounter the above-mentioned negativities. You can be in the place you deserve if you prefer to show courage and be in the foreground instead of turning to the fields you have knowledge and staying in the background. For such a situation, experts recommend that support from psychologists should be sought. In business environments where you think you are good and successful, show yourself and do not wait for someone to discover you.
As you'll see when you look around, if you're aware, "Incompetent Enthusiasts" are often there for the COMFORT of the group or power they lean on, rather than for merit, unfortunately not because they're competent. Because they are too selfish to think of anyone but themselves.
We also have very beautiful idioms and proverbs describing this effect:
For example;
- Our ancestors said, "The ignorant is daring, he thinks he is a scholar"
- They said, "The empty ear stands upright, the full ear stands bent".
- The term “self-confidence poisoning” is also in accordance with the expressions that explain this effect or the definition of "insufficient ambitious".
So how can we recognize these friends who are abundant around us? We will explain this issue with some events in our next article. If we give a few tips about these, in general terms;
- They know the best of everything,
- They abuse science and education,
- They are too noisy,
- They refer to the fact that they handle everything,
- They are always in ready-for-anything mode,
- They squat over them and trample their lower ones,
- They are hypocrites,
- They deny their contradictions,
- They like to brag and praise
Let's close with a humorous anecdote. In order not to touch the spirit of the joke, I am quoting it as it is. In fact, this joke seemed to me to imply the bitter end that such incompetent enthusiasts would eventually suffer. Hope to see you in the next article...
(To be continued)
A turkey was chatting with a bull. “I woud love to be able to get to the top of that tree,” sighed the turkey,“ but I haven’t got the energy.“
“Well, why don’t you nibble on some of my droppings?“ Replied the bull. “They’re are packed with nutrients.“
The turkey pecked at a lump of dung, and found it actually gave him enough strength to reach the lowest branch of the tree. The next day, after eating some more dung, he reached the second branch.
Finally after a fourth night, the turkey was proudly perched at the top of the tree. He was promptly spotted by a farmer, who shot him out of the tree.
Moral of the story:
Bull shit might get you to the top, but it won’t keep you there.
