Why are we like this?
In a book on human psychology I recently read, it is mentioned that three elements must be together for the social roles in life to be fully realized: The first is to have the knowledge required by the social role you play, Secondly, to be aware of the responsibilities that that role entails, The third is to have the moral maturity and equipment required for the role played.
When I look at the general situation of my country, like every ordinary citizen, I always ask myself the question "Why are we like this?" Yes, why are we like this and we continue to be like this. Here, in this article, I searched for crazy answers to this crazy question I asked myself again. Why is our nation like this? Why are we different from what is written in books? Why do we always feel like something is missing? In short, why are we like this? So, instead of giving evasive answers, I will give a direct and satisfying answer.
In a book on human psychology I recently read, it is mentioned that three elements must be together for the social roles in life to be fully realized:
The first is to have the knowledge required by the social role you play,
Secondly, to be aware of the responsibilities that that role entails,
The third is to have the moral maturity and equipment required for the role played.
In fact, I saw how well you fit the profile of the "well-equipped person" I have mentioned in my previous articles.
Who is an Equipped Person? https://strasam.org/kultur-sanat-ve-egitim/egitim-ve-ogretim/donanimli-insan-kimdir-981
When we look at the profile of people in our country, one or two of these three elements are usually missing in our people when they play their social roles. We all see this by living, by looking at what is going on around us, don't we? You look at a good physician, a faculty member who is knowledgeable and well-equipped in his field, but for the sake of earning a profit, he leaves his primary responsibilities at the university, neglects his work, and neglects his duty. Or, although he is a knowledgeable and well-equipped physician and acts ethically, he can be so irresponsible that he turns off his phone in the evenings so that patients do not disturb him. We experience this in every profession and in every situation.
We always read in the tabloid press that someone who is known as a good family father or mother, despite being well-equipped, knowledgeable and moral, can evade their responsibilities or become known for their immorality.
The fact that these three elements do not come together shows us the prevalence of an unhealthy state of mind throughout the society, which I feel the need to ask "why are we like this?". Then the following question comes to mind: "So how did we get like this?"
The first thing that comes to my mind in my workroom where I am sitting now is this: The tradition of democracy, which means self-government by the people, did not exist or was very weak in the lands we live in. Unfortunately, this is our reality. The sudden encounter of such a society with freedom and democracy has led to a misunderstanding of the concept of tolerance, which is at the core of democracy! Instead of tolerating each other and tolerating those who are different from themselves, people have come to expect tolerance for their own shortcomings or mistakes. We have become people who do not fulfill their social roles properly and yet are aware of this and expect to be tolerated. I think this is why we are the way we are.
Democracy and freedom have been and continue to be misperceived as tolerating one's own shortcomings and mistakes. How else can we explain the fact that it is said about a certain mayor that "he stole, but he also did good deeds" and that this is accepted by the society?
I can think of the following question, which I am sure you will ask as well: Is there no one among us who manages to carry and play these social roles properly, who brings these three elements together? Is there no one? Of course there are. Who are these people? Those who cannot answer this question, whose minds are on the run and who go to a psychiatric doctor. Naturally, psychiatric doctors earn their bread from these people who are different from us.
Such people who are different from us actually live in pain because they fulfill their responsibilities and duties properly. They suffer from not being understood. And instead of accepting that it is normal for them not to adapt to such a society, we are trying to cure them, rowing upstream.
"But isn't there a way to fix this?" Of course there is. I am a bit pessimistic about this, but I am not completely hopeless. Hope is like a light shining through the darkness. Being hopeful requires labor, time and patience.
Today, our society has become a success-oriented consumer society. No one has the time or the patience to really try to fix things anymore. From the moment everyone is born, they are taught to be young, beautiful, handsome, and to live by consuming everything in order to be successful and valued in this life. The message is given that those who can do these things will be healthy and happy and those who cannot will be unhappy and restless. Perceptions have replaced emotions. Moreover, psychiatrists are confused about what to do and what to treat. I worry that psychiatrists are trying to fit the handful of good people in our society, the healthy part of society, into the irresponsible and unhealthy masses who have accepted the corrupt order of society so that they can live the rest of their lives without suffering more.
In fact, there is a great corruption in all countries, from the underdeveloped to the developed ones. This corruption is more visible in politicians who are the mirror of society. The owners of capital, on the other hand, are doing nothing more than ensuring their own interests by sitting at the helm of politics.
Corruption, abuse, favoritism and indifference are sweeping the world. Declining economic growth, stagnation, inflation, rising cost of living and the misery that is an extension of this bad trend are rampant among the people, scorching them. Even in the most developed USA, there is speculation about politicians and people like the madman Trump can sit at the helm of the most developed country in the world. A country like England, on which the sun never set for a while, cannot find a decent politician to govern it, and the life span of a prime minister is as long as a lettuce. Despot Putin is scorching the world. It is up to actor Zelensky to stop him. Old Biden is incapable of governing himself, trying to set the world straight. Xi is encircling China like a closed box. Europe is trying to close its rich and beautiful garden to the savages (refugees, asylum seekers) coming from the forests. In backward countries like Afghanistan, the people are abandoned to their fate. Africa is trying to stand up but failing. The Arab world is relying on monarchs and enjoying the pleasure of making deals with the Zionists.
What is Turkey doing in this turmoil? We are busy challenging the world despite our economy that has sunk to the bottom. We want to lull ourselves to sleep with the fairy tale that everyone is hostile and staring at us. Instead of working and developing the country, we are marginalizing each other, blessing those in power and trying to get benefits in return. In this turmoil, we have normalized the understanding that the captain is the one who floats his ship and the one who cannot swim should crawl, some of us are waiting for a new order to come in the 2023 elections, and some of us are busy destroying all contrary voices and hitting them on the head in order not to disrupt our current honey-doughnut order.
I ask you: Can a truly healthy person continue to live in this social structure, in this social order where indifference and irresponsibility are at their peak?
May God give us all sanity, and may He bless the young people who have left us with us with good fortune and clear paths.
Stay with respect and love.
