Legendary and Super Agile F-15 Eagle and Su-27 Flanker

When comparing Western and Eastern technology and fighter jets, we cannot omit two aircraft whose performance has been intensely and constantly compared: the McDonnell Douglas F-15 "Eagle" and the Sukhoi Su-27 "Flanker".

The American Legend F-15 Eagle...The Noble Eagle...

In fact, Americans do not refer to this aircraft as Eagle, which is its official name, but as Noble Eagle, referring to the American Eagle.

In the picture; F-15 Eagle is seen.

The F-15, just like the Su-27, is an air superiority aircraft. This superiority is achieved through a combination of unprecedented maneuverability and acceleration, range, weapons and avionics. It can penetrate enemy defenses and outperform and outfight any existing enemy aircraft. The F-15 has electronic systems and weapons to detect, intercept, track and attack enemy aircraft while operating in friendly or enemy-controlled airspace. Weapons and flight control systems are designed so that one person can fight safely and effectively from air-to-air.

The F-15's superior maneuverability and acceleration are achieved through its high engine thrust-to-weight ratio and low wing loading. Low wing loading (the ratio of aircraft weight to wing area) is a vital factor for maneuverability and, combined with a high thrust-to-weight ratio, allows the aircraft to turn rapidly without losing airspeed.

Russian Honor Su-27 Flanker

In Eastern Bloc military aviation, Sukhoi represents a legend. The Sukhoi design bureau built successful aircraft such as the SU-24 Fencer attack aircraft and the SU-27 Flanker series air superiority fighter. The Sukhoi Su-27 Flanker was the pinnacle of Soviet technology at its debut in the mid-80s. It was large but extremely agile, with powerful engines and a high payload carrying capacity.

With the Flanker fighter, the Soviet aviation industry made a leap in military technology. The Su-27 became legendary not only because it had 27 absolute records, but because it was a truly great aircraft and a great achievement of Soviet aviation.

The Su-27 is an extraordinarily maneuverable super-machine and one of the most agile aircraft ever built. The Russians proudly demonstrate its maneuverability during air shows. The Russian Air Force's "Russian Knights" aerobatic team performs with six Su-27s.

The Flanker is an extremely agile aircraft, controllable even at very low speeds and high angles of attack. The Cobra maneuver (Pugachev's Cobra) (a short straight flight at an angle of attack of 120°) is a dramatic and very challenging maneuver often performed by the Su-27 during air shows.

Pugachev's Su-27 Cobra Maneuver

An aircraft that performs this maneuver in a dog-fight will not stand much of a chance against its opponent. Of course, we would have liked to see the Su-27's cobra maneuver with a load of weapons on board, that would have been spectacular, but Pugachev could have argued that real dog-fighting is not done while carrying BVR (Beyond Visual Range) weapons; it is done when you have used all your missiles and have only your cannon left, you jettison your external tanks and defend yourself with your cannon or attack with your cannon. Yes, in this case it is impossible not to agree with Pugacehev, this is the real dogfight and you need a very high maneuverability. Be careful with the Su-27 in a dogfight, it is ruthless.

The F-15 Family...

The F-15 began its design, manufacturing and first flight journey about 10 years before the Su-27 and was originally designed to intercept the MiG-25 Foxbat, a cold war legend of the time. It made its first flight in 1972 and entered service with the US Air Force in 1976.

It was produced as the Eagle in F-15A, B, C, D variants. Together with the F-15E, it was designed as the Strike Eagle with the main mission of deep strike but can also be used in the hunting role. F-15I, F-15S, F-15K, F-15SG, F-15SA, F-15QA, F-15EX are other F-15E based variants.

Su-27 Family

The Su-27's original design intent was to "kill" the US Air Force's then-new F-15A in the air. It made its first flight in 1977 and entered service with the USSR Air Force in 1984.

To demonstrate the aircraft's power as an F-15 killer, the Soviets set 22 air records with the Su-27 in 1986, many of which were previously held by the F-15A. Such impressive base performance was due to the extremely clean aerodynamic design and the large Lyulka AL-31F series afterburning turbofan engine.

The Su-27 Family has been continuously upgraded and manufactured in variants such as Flanker A, B, D, E, F, H, M or in variants such as Su-27K (Su-33 / "Flanker-D"), Su-27KUB (Su-33UB), Su-27M (Su-35/Su-37 / "Flanker-E/F"), Su-27PU (Su-30 / "Flanker-C"), Su-30M/MK ("Flanker-H"), etc. In summary, the Su-27 was blocked into the main categories of Su-30, Su-33, Su-34, Su-35 and Su-37. The Su-35, which is more popular today, is actually a Su-27M variant. The development of the Su-27 family continues.

Comparison of Eagle's and Flanker's weapons

The F-15 can carry a wide range of air-to-air weapons. It can be armed with combinations of AIM-120 advanced medium-range air-to-air missiles in the lower fuselage corners, AIM-9L/M Sidewinder or AIM-120 missiles on the two pylons under the wings, and an internal 20 mm Gatling gun in the right wing root.

Sukhoi Su-27 armament includes a single 30 mm Gryazev-Shipunov GSh-30-1 cannon in the starboard wing root and up to 10 fixed points for missiles and other weapons. The Flanker's standard missile armament for air-to-air combat is a combination of Vympel R-73 (AA-11 Archer), Vympel R-27 (AA-10 'Alamo') guns, extended range and IR-guided models. The Flanker has an arsenal of weapons comparable in some respects to the Eagle.

F-15 Eagle and Su-27 Flanker; Invincible Fighters

The Russian Su-27 Flanker can compete head-to-head with the US Air Force F-15 Eagle. Both the F-15 and Su-27 Flanker are designed to be powerful air superiority fighters. A Flanker will outperform the Eagle in a dogfight, but is the difference that big? Each pilot will probably share a different opinion. The F-15 Eagle is a twin-engine, all-weather, highly maneuverable tactical fighter designed by McDonnell Douglas (now Boeing) to gain and maintain air superiority in air combat.

The F-15 is one of the most successful modern fighter jets, with more than 100 air combat victories (about half of which belong to the Israeli Air Force) and no losses in dogfights. The only loss suffered by the F-15 squadron was from anti-aircraft fire from the ground.

According to the USAF, F-15s have downed the following aircraft (air-kill) in the Gulf War alone:

5 MiG-29 "Fulcrum", 2 MiG-25 "Foxbat", 8 MiG-23 "Flogger", 2 MiG-21 "Fishbed", 2 Su-25 "Frogfoots", 4 Su-22 "Fitter", 1 Su-7, 6 Mirage F1, 1 IL-76, 1 Pilatus PC-9, 2 Mi-8.

The F-15s in the Israeli Air Force are estimated to have around 50 air victories. Israeli F-15s shot down 33 Syrian jets in the 1982 Lebanon war alone.

It is also known that most of these victories were against export version Russian aircraft, flown by poorly trained pilots without AWACS support, and that the F-15 had a great advantage in these battles, but the F-15 attacked and won its opponent without discriminating between weak and strong, and victory is victory.

The Su-27 suffered losses due to anti-aircraft fire from the ground against a kill ratio of 6-0. It had one loss due to ground fire in the Abkhazian War and the Angolan Civil War, five in the Ethiopian-Eritrean War and one air victory in the First Chechen War.

The Eagle's air superiority is achieved through a combination of superior maneuverability (low wing loading) and acceleration (high engine thrust-to-weight ratio), range, weapons and multi-mission avionics (including head-up display, advanced radar, inertial navigation system, flight). Its instruments include ultra-high frequency communications, a tactical navigation system, an instrument landing system, an internally mounted tactical electronic warfare system, a "friend or foe identification" system, an electronic countermeasures suite and a central digital computer.

The F-15 is equipped with electronics and weapons that enable the pilot to detect, intercept, track and attack enemy aircraft while operating in friendly or enemy-controlled airspace. The Eagle will probably have an advantage at longer ranges due to its superior avionics.

The F-15 may be considered superior in terms of BVR, but it should be noted that the Su-27 is close to it.

In the Cope India exercise, in air combat between Indian Su-27MKIs of the Su-30 family and US F-15s, the Su-30MKI achieved an astonishing 9:1 kill ratio.

Conclusion:

The maneuverability of the Su-27 Flanker is slightly higher than that of the F-15, but the difference is only as much as the skill and experience of the pilots operating the aircraft. The F-15 also has a slightly higher BVR (Beyond Visual Range) capability.

These two aircraft are true performance aircraft, agile and powerful, with a tremendous aerodynamic design. They are both "combat proven front-line fighters and flagships".
