In the evening hours of 28 May, news of the crash of a military aircraft near the Albuquerque airport in New Mexico, USA, hit the agencies. This is how I learnt about the accident. After a short research, I learnt that the accident occurred near the airport. It is understood that the pilot parachuted and landed safely. There is a military base near Albuquerque International Airport: Kirtland Air Force Base. It is likely that the F-35 aircraft took off from this aerodrome and the accident occurred shortly afterwards. Some sources report that the aircraft took off from Albuquerque (Sunport) airport and crashed somewhere on the south side of the airport.
As far as I can understand, I assess that the crashed aircraft took off from Kirtland Air Force Base, located southeast of Sunport. Therefore, it seems that most likely an F-35A aircraft crashed. The good news is that the pilot survived and was hospitalised.
The cause of the accident that caused the F-35 to crash is not yet clear. In line with information from some eyewitnesses, it is reported that the aircraft crashed due to a malfunction during take-off. However, it is understood from the photographs that the aircraft took off and crashed in an area outside the airport. As a matter of fact, Albuquerque airport was reopened to flights after a short time. However, it is not known whether the runway at Kirtland Air Force Base is open for flights.
