What is the root cause of Russian hostility to the Azov Battalion?

Using the Eastern Corps as a backbone, the Azov Battalion was formed on 5 May 2014 in Berdiansk by a white nationalist. Azov started as a unit of the Special Tasks Patrol Police. It is known as the Azov Special Operations Detachment.

‘Black Sun’: Why are some Ukrainian soldiers proudly wearing the symbol associated with the Nazis on their uniforms?

The symbol, known as the ‘black sun’, was also seen on the body of the far-right attacker who gunned down two mosques in New Zealand in 2019, killing 51 people.

The same symbol was also published on the chest of a soldier on NATO's website. The photo was later removed from NATO's website due to criticism...

Azov Battalion

The Azov Battalion has its roots in an ultras group of FC Metalist Kharkiv called ‘Sect 82’ (1982 is the year of the group's foundation)

In late February 2014, when a separatist movement was active in Kharkov during the 2014 Ukrainian crisis, ‘Sect 82’ occupied the oblast regional administration building in Kharkov and served as a local ‘self-defence force’. Shortly afterwards, a company of the Special Tasks Patrol Police called ‘Eastern Corps’ was formed on the basis of ‘Sect 82’.

On 13 April 2014, Interior Minister Arsen Avakov issued a decree authorising the creation of new paramilitary forces of up to 12,000 people.

Their symbol is a letter Z with a line in the centre.

It is very similar to the Hitler swastika.

The related symbol is the logo featuring the Wolfsangel, one of the Nazi symbols used by the 2nd SS Panzer Division Das Reich. The Azov representatives state that the symbol is an abbreviation of the slogan ‘National Idea’.

In recent years, it is an undisguisable fact that in their struggles with each other, countries are now trying to fight with mercenary militaries instead of national armed forces, and for this purpose, they support these forces with money and weapons, which they can use according to the region and the country, and try to impose their indirect demands on the country they oppose through these forces.

For the USA in the Middle East, this was first Blackwaters and then the Academy company. Later, religious organisations such as ISIS were added to these organisations and they tried to fulfil the desired tasks on behalf of the soldiers of the relevant state.

The first existence of this issue emerged during the Afghanistan-Russia war. The struggle of a religious organisation, which I call the Taliban, against Russia with the support of the CIA on behalf of the USA was embodied in a real sense, and this issue took the stage in different ways many times later.

For our country, these organisations were first seen in the form of Armenian revenge Turgays and then started to operate in our Southern and Eastern Anatolia regions and in the north of Iraq under the name of PKK terrorist organisation and later in Syria, which feeds APO, under the name of YPG and started to consume both the material and human resources of our country. The Armenian terrorist organisation ASALA is one of these organisations.

The Russians have also adapted to this situation and tried to fulfil their duties as civilian paramilitary forces by forming Wagner groups, headed by Putin's cook, to have mercenaries in the regions related to oil and to fulfil the country's objectives as civilian paramilitary forces. They receive profit share from the places they seize.

Ukraine is now the new name of an Afghanistan front that has been created next to Europe. Instead of the religious forces formerly known as the Taliban, the Nazi origin paramilitary forces against the Russians in Europe have been brought to the stage of history as the most useful ground.

The new front between the east and the west, Ukraine and all kinds of political and intellectual organisations such as the Azov battalions, which are ultra-nationalist or against the Russians, will find prestige, money and weapons in this geography.

The Russian state, with its unlined tanks marked with the letter Z, declares to the world that it is acting to eliminate these Nazi organisations. Putin accuses Ukraine of Nazism because of these Nazi organisations. In fact, he is declaring to the world that he will not allow the creation of a PKK-like organisation for himself in the region.

In my opinion, the letter Z on the Russian tanks also carries the expression that we are going to clean Ukraine from the Nazis.

The PKK is an old organisation for us, but the AZOV battalion is a new name for Ukraine, which is on the side of Russia.

It is also very clear that it is a planned organisation developed to consume Russia's assets in the future.

For Russia, with its defeat against the Taliban in Afghanistan and the reasons behind it, it is clear that this struggle will last for decades and will involve Europe as well.

It is an immutable fact that the same events have taken place under different names in history.

Whoever made Germany attack Russia during the Nazi era, the same countries have started to organise the member states of the European Union to fight together against Russia.

But it is also an immutable fact that they started by selling arms and making profit.
