Training Costs of US Air Force Pilots by Aircraft Type are Jaw-dropping!
Training a pilot to fly the F-22 Raptor, America's premier air superiority fighter, costs about ten times more than training a pilot to fly the C-17 cargo plane.
With a study conducted by the US Air Force and RAND Corporation; In 2019, a detailed analysis of pilot training costs by aircraft type in the US Air Force was conducted. The study was updated according to the costs in 2023.
In order to assess the cost of training a fighter pilot, RAND took into account several key criteria, such as the cost per flight hour of the aircraft to be learnt to use and the support costs for the maintenance of this aircraft, in addition to the direct expenditures (salary and other personal rights) made to the student as an officer.
The analysis found that the cost of training pilots varies greatly depending on the platform flown. For example, training a pilot to fly the F-22 Raptor, America's premier air superiority fighter, was about ten times more expensive than training a pilot to fly the C-17 cargo plane. This difference was due to the fact that the flight cost per hour of fighter aircraft such as the F-22 was much higher than the flight cost per hour of cargo aircraft such as the C-17.
Yes; it is obvious that the training costs of fighter/bomber pilots are extremely high compared to the training costs of cargo pilots.
In addition, the pilot training costs of high-tech and 5th generation stealth-capable fighter/bomber aircraft such as the F-22 and F-35A are also higher than those of other fighter/bomber aircraft.
The costs below are not the initial and advanced pilot training costs of the US Air Force pilots; they are the costs of training those who have completed their pilot training according to the types of combat aircraft they will fly. In other words, in addition to the costs here, there are also initial and advanced pilot training costs, and these costs are approximately between $1,167,143-1,500,000.
