Gladio, Anti-Communist Associations, Cults in Turkey
The civilian organisation of the Turkish Gladio is clear. The civilian Gladio in Turkey is organised through two branches. The first is nationalist organisations such as the Anti-Communist Associations and the second is the sects.
In this article, I will briefly tell you about the historical background of the Fetö phenomenon. The observations here are based only on my observations, of course you may have different evaluations.
1950s, 60s, Cold War period. Turkey chose its side, joined the Western alliance, joined NATO, but the Soviet Union and the threat of communism still persisted. In order to eliminate the threat of communism in NATO member countries, secret organisations based on civilian and military cooperation were established. We commonly refer to these as Gladio.
Gladio is usually organised within the Armed Forces of countries. NATO carries out covert operations in countries through its Gladio's by applying counter-terror methods. These operations sometimes take the form of a provocative bombing, sometimes an assassination, sometimes the preparation of a military coup.
So, was there Gladio in Turkey? There are some allegations against the Special Warfare Department, I do not know the details of the military part, but the civilian organisation of the Turkish Gladio is clear. The civilian Gladio in Turkey is organised through two branches. The first is nationalist organisations such as the Anti-Communist Associations and the second is the sects. The common point is that the NATO Gladio acts through right-wing politics in Turkey.
Before 12 September, it is obvious that the coup environment was shaped through the military Gladio and a political party that we all know. The youth organisation of the political party I mentioned had armed militia forces before 12 September. They were supposedly fighting against communism with national feelings. It is known that young people recruited from Anatolia were trained in special camps by exploiting their feelings of nationalism, young people were given weapons and made to take action by saying ‘death to communists’. This was one side of the business.
On the other side were the sects. Uğur Mumcu, in his book Rabıta, wrote about the illegal organisation of sects through Saudi, and therefore US, capital and their activities in Turkish political life. He clearly revealed the relationship between politics, sects and trade. If you find the book, be sure to read it. Who knows, maybe the reason he was killed was because he wrote this book.
In the process that started with the Soviet Union's invasion of Afghanistan in the early 1980s, the United States, within the framework of the Carter doctrine, launched the Green Belt Project, which would surround the Soviet Union from the south with an Islamic line. The implementers of the Green Belt Project in Turkey were political Islamists and sects. However, when Turkey, which was shaken by economic and social crises, lost to the left politically and the way to power was opened for the leftists in the elections, the button was pressed and the coup d'état of 12 September took place. The nationalist structure of Gladio was pruned by the military government, but the leftists of this country were the ones who were left with the bill; they always get beaten up at the end of every job.
The 12 September period imposed liberalism economically and the Turkish-Islamic synthesis ideologically on the country. We are still suffering from this today. But did the 12 September administration, which disbanded the nationalist Gladio, touch the sects? The answer to this question is interestingly no. I think the reason for this was that the sect structures were closed organisations and they were not exposed like the so-called nationalist elements. In the period before the 12 September coup, they did not participate in fights much. Cults have always been useful structures for the USA in terms of organisations that are not deciphered.
In 1989-1990, the wall collapsed and the cold war ended. When the balance was disturbed, instabilities emerged in the political structures in our region. The USA had to intervene militarily both in Iraq and Afghanistan. In a sense, it got bogged down in Middle East politics. Anyway, let's not digress. As we said, 12 September did not touch the sects. The sects, which became stronger thanks to this, started to establish organic co-operation with right-wing parties in Turkish politics. They penetrated political structures and became stronger. From time to time, some groups within the Turkish Armed Forces reacted openly and harshly to these organisations, but they were not accepted because they gave the appearance of tutelage over politics, and created a social reaction (headscarf ban, etc.). Even some left-wing (Ecevit) political governments did not touch the sects for the sake of votes and the continuation of their power.
Here we are in the 2000s. After the Cold War, the USA, which could not prevent instabilities in the Middle East through military intervention, came to our region with a new project. In this process called the Arab Spring, the oppressive regimes in the Middle East were to be liquidated through popular uprisings. Moderate Islam was a very suitable intellectual infrastructure for this project. As a matter of fact, the organisation called Ikhwan was directly involved in these movements. The Arab Spring was shaped through Sunni (actually Hanafi) Islamic thought. Could such a movement start and not affect us? Immediate action was taken. Under the influence of the economic crisis, moderate political Islam has marched to power in Turkey from two sides. The formal side was the Welfare Party, which was able to garner reaction votes, and the informal side was the sects.
Among these sects, Fetö, the most useful special instrument of the USA, came to the fore thanks to the favourable political environment and even open support, and started to establish a parallel state structure with the elements it infiltrated into the state. The seeds planted by the USA and NATO in our country in the 1960s began to bear fruit once again after the 12 September coup. I don't need to tell the rest of the story, you all already know what has happened since 2013...
Don't you wonder what happened to the Gladio structures in other NATO countries? They were all deciphered, uncovered and put on trial.
The moral of the story is that right-wing politics in Turkey is manipulative and does not give me any confidence. The left? It has not taken office yet...
