Who should be the Presidential Candidate?
Unfortunately, we are constantly talking about "candidates" because of a freak system. It is normal to talk about party programmes, not candidates, in order to elect the government of a country. However, we have been talking about "one man" and "candidate" for years. This is wrong
Today is an important day for our country. The table of 6, which has come together for Turkey, free from political concerns, is gathering to determine the CB candidate.
First of all, let me make the following observation. Unfortunately, we are constantly talking about "candidate" because of a freak system. Normally, in order to elect the government of a country, party programmes are discussed, not candidates. However, we have been talking about "one man" and "candidate" for years. This is wrong... Hopefully, after this election, this anti-democratic system dictated to us will change.
Another observation of mine is the criticism that the opposition could not nominate candidates. However, on the contrary, there is a surplus of candidates in the opposition. Both Kılıçdaroğlu, Yavaş and İmamoğlu are candidates with a high chance of being elected. Let's not forget that the candidate is not the candidate of CHP, it is the common candidate that 6 parties with different political thoughts will agree on. This is an important event for our democracy process. It is good not to be without an alternative...
So what do we expect from the candidate to be announced by the opposition?
First of all, the candidate must believe in and defend the fundamental qualities of the Republic of Turkey without the slightest doubt. As stated in our Constitution, the Republic of Turkey is a "democratic, secular and social state of law". The Turkish nation will not cross paths with those who seek an alternative to its "state". The candidate should uncompromisingly defend the fundamental qualities of our state.
We want and hope that the candidate will be a "unifier". The divisive and polarising politics implemented by the government has done and is doing a lot of damage to this country. No one should forget that Alevis, Sunnis, Turks, Kurds, rightists, leftists, natives and immigrants founded this country together and have the right to govern it together. As much as your vote has a "right" to govern, the vote of the "other" has the same right. Ignoring a section, a group or a community condemns the governance system to failure from the beginning and renders it "meaningless". Common sense and participation can only be achieved through unity.
Another characteristic we look for is that the candidate should be "responsible". We want a candidate who accepts criticism, can make self-criticism and has the civilised courage to pay the price when he/she makes a mistake.
For example, we want a candidate who is polite and courteous. Politeness is a very human characteristic. It should be a candidate with a high representation ability who does not scold, insult, speak patronisingly or humiliate those who did not vote for him/her. From the person who sits in the highest office of the Republic of Turkey, we want "Atatürk's courtesy" towards every member of the nation.
Not to mention honesty, virtue, merit, a good education, hard work, freedom, democracy and belief in the law. These are indispensable qualities for a candidate who will claim to govern a country like Turkey in the 21st century.
Another expectation is that the candidate to be announced should have the dynamism to set Turkey on a new path. Unfortunately, Turkey has started its second century with an economic crisis and an earthquake disaster. The outlook is not encouraging. We all know that the candidate who will take over the administration of Turkey will inherit a complete "wreck". First of all, it is necessary to remove this wreckage and then to enter the restoration process with a new excitement and spirit. The reliable institutions of the state must be re-established, built and revitalised. While doing this, a "vision" should be put forward. Of course, we will not diminish our support, but the new President will have a very difficult job.
All in all, as Turkish people, we are hopeful for the future and we are aware that we will determine our own future with our own will. National will is everything and is superior to one man. We are united, we will express our will with our votes for a modern Turkey living in peace, tranquility and prosperity in the second century of the Republic. It is up to the politicians to hear our legitimate voice and mobilise this synergy.
