Strategic Importance of Groundwaters Increases

Groundwater; It is one of the most strategic natural resources that has been used for a long time to meet the demand for drinking-use, agricultural irrigation and water due to its advantages such as being able to be put into operation in a short time and generally not requiring treatment.

Self-Renewal of Groundwaters:

For this reason, groundwater can be considered as a common pool or warehouse that can be used by different users and takes a long time to renew when used excessively and to clean up when polluted.

However, in some regions, our groundwater is over-consumed before it has a chance to renew itself, and water levels are falling rapidly from year to year. Therefore, it is of great importance to increase the protection and efficient use of these resources.

Groundwater, which is the most reliable water source that can be used in case of drought, has strategic importance as well as social and economic values. Groundwater can be made available in a very short time in case of destruction of water resources coming to settlements in case of any disaster or war.

The only source of water that can be protected from nuclear pollution is groundwater.

Groundwaters are strategic:

One fourth of the agricultural irrigation in our country, about half of the drinking and utility water demand is met from groundwater resources. For this reason, it is of high strategic importance as well as economic. However, it is threatened by excessive and uncontrolled gravity and pollution. Cleaning of groundwater after contamination takes a very long time and costs very high costs. For this reason, this pollution carries the risk of affecting both the people who benefit from this source at the time of pollution and the future generations.

All these features mentioned above make groundwater resources very important all over the world. World Water Day is celebrated around the world with different themes every year, within the framework of the decision taken by the United Nations General Assembly on March 22, 1993.

In order to draw attention to the increasing importance of groundwater, this year's theme of 22 March World Water Day has been determined as “Making Groundwater Visible”.

Groundwater Level:

85% of the safe groundwater reserve in our country has been allocated. However, groundwater levels are decreasing rapidly in many basins as a result of uncontrolled withdrawals. In addition, our groundwater is polluted by water returning from irrigation, industrial wastewater and domestic waste.

In order to prevent these, actions such as online (instant) monitoring of groundwater levels within the scope of river basin integrated water management, land consolidation, training and awareness services for efficient use of water, and supporting and accelerating the modernization of irrigation networks should be implemented.

Conclusion:

In short, we must use our natural resources, such as water and soil, whose strategic importance is increasing day by day, in a sustainable way by considering the social and national benefit. We have to increase our social awareness on this issue.
